The history of the Saburomaru Distillery in Tonami City (Toyama) began in 1952 when Wakatsuru Sake Brewery obtained a whiskey distilling license. In 1953, they released the blended whiskey “Sunshine Whiskey” but large-scale fire broke out in the same year. However, it was rebuilt within the same year with the help of local people and miraculously revived. Malt distilling continued intermittently until 2016, when Wakatsuru Sake Brewery decides to renovate the facilities in the Hokuriku region to focus on malt whiskey production. Renovated traditional Japanese pot still in 2017, Distillation on the rebuilt site started for distilling the whiskey used to blend ‘Saburomaru The Fool 0’, the first single malt to be released in 2020. In 2019, commissioned two ZEMON pot stills designed by the traditional Bonsho manufacturing foundry of Oigo Seisakusho, Saburomaru distills a malt whiskey that strongly emphasizes the characteristics of this atypical still.
